While analyzing mise en scene, I will also be focusing on the approach the director takes with cinematography. While Mickey is in the ring, the lighting, camera angles, filters, and different camera lenses become an important factor. I will be taking each of those into account as I critically analyze the film. I did not see this film when it first came out, because to be honest the trailer did not do the film justice.
Vespasian was without a doubt one of the strongest and more strategic emperors to have ever ruled Rome. His influence set standards for future emperors that followed him. At the start of his rule over the Flavian Dynasty, one of his first acts was to rebuild the finances of Rome by collecting and raising taxes. Vespasian was pushed by to collect all of the taxes that were owed. Naturally, the public was none too thrilled with Vespasian’s new tax policies and began to protest. Vespasian was trying to rebuild a broken financial system while ruling Rome at the same time and the events leading up to his reign are nothing short of compelling.
Emperor Nero was one of the last ruling emperors before the Flavian Dynasty. Ruling for fourteen years, in between 54 and 68, Nero put most of his attention on bettering the lives of the Romans and the culture. It is said that Nero was the last remaining descendant of Julius Caesar. Nero’s mother Agripina was one of the primary influences on Nero becoming emperor at such an early age. Nero inherited the claim to his reign from Claudius. Nero was Claudius’ adopted son. After the suicide of Claudius’ wife, Agripina decided to take advantage of the situation and marry Claudius. Just at the tender age of 16 and the minimum required age to become an emperor, Nero was foreseeing all political, financial, and agricultural responsibilities of Rome. (The Year of the Four Emperors – Kenneth Wellesley)
This part of history tends to get a tad bit clouded, however, two separate accounts from romans close to Claudius claim that he was poisoned by his new wife.
The obvious intent, so that Nero could take the throne seeing as Nero was heir to the throne. It is said that Agripina poisoned Claudius with a mushroom. Claudius had another biological son, but the son was not of age to rule. Historians write that Nero was a fair and wise ruler. Nero did not make rash and spontaneous decisions as past rulers had done. Nero had maintained the position that Rome did not need to grow and just needed a stern, fair emperor to keep the culture flourishing.
In 64 A.D., there was a great fire that destroyed parts of Rome and there was a lot of speculation as to how the fire began. Especially, among Roman officials. One rumor was that Nero had the fire started but there are too many different accounts of why Nero would do such a thing, that it is not a very strong theory. More and more people began to believe that Nero was responsible for the fire. Nero, realizing this, then returned to one of his earlier passions in life, art and theater (Death of the Roman Empire – Stewart Perowne).
When an Emperor who is responsible for the progression of an empire decides that he no longer wants this and essentially vacates the responsibilities, it is frowned upon to say the least. Even a few of Nero’s ranking officials were planning on murdering him because of this. Not only were they planning on murdering him, but they were planning on replacing him with a potential ruler named Piso. Fortunately for Nero, he discovered the plot against him and he had many, many people executed. One of those who were executed was Corbulo. Corbulo was one of the highest ranking military officials that Nero had. After the execution of his emperor, the public viewed Nero as crazy or insane. Nero was losing his once gained popularity by the day. (The Year of the Four Emperors – Kenneth Wellesley)
Nero was clever in the sense that he had spies all over the community to let him know who was with him and who was not. Clearly, these were very dark times for Nero, and he could sense that his time as emperor was coming to an end. Nero’s actions became so outlandish that an uprising against him had begun to occur. Having found out about this, Nero ran from his empire, and remained in a secluded area with a servant.
Through his usual means of communication, Nero found out that he was declared a public enemy by the senate. Upon reading various biographies, many believe that this was the straw that broke the camel’s back for Nero. He could not stand being hunted down like a dog until his dying day. Upon hearing this, he had his servant stab him. This caused a civil war to ensue. One may wonder, why would a civil war come about when an “insane” emperor commits suicide? Before Nero fled, he had every one of his successors killed. That meant that any one man with the right amount of power and influence could now take over Rome.
The small time frame in which civil war ensued was slowly put to an end when one of the four emperors took over. His name was Galba. Galba was the first emperor to take over during the “Year of the Four Emperors”. Galba was known for his ridiculous increase on taxes. Galba had massive taxes executed on the areas of Rome that did not support him as much as others had. Galba was not as young as the other three emperors. His body, energy, and appearance deteriorated to a point where Galba had a group of loyalists with him at all times to assist him in every day activities. This and the combination of his tax increase on those who did not favor him, made him lose popularity quite fast. (Tacitus – Histories 2).
This led to two groups in Germania Superior not pledging loyalty to Galba, but instead to another one of the four emperors, Otho. At this point in time, Galba was very, very fragile. Galba was ambushed by Otho’s soldiers and killed in the beginning of 69 A.D. A very long list of soldiers claimed responsibility for the death of Galba and the head of Galba was even delivered to Otho. This was a particularly disgusting time in Roman history. Galba trusted Otho and this was unforeseen, regardless of Galba’s unpopularity. (69 A.D.: The Year of the Four Emperors – Gwyn Morgan).
Otho adopted a good amount of Nero’s principles, laws, and even some of his military leaders & close companions. Otho became popular very quickly due to his resemblance to Nero. It seemed that the public had missed their beloved Nero, even after his actions near the end of his reign. Even his statues were reconstructed. A month or so into Otho’s reign, he began to realize that ruling Rome was hard work indeed. Perhaps, not as easy as say, betraying someone who trusts you, and taking their place.
An unexpected turn of events began to unfold once Otho found out about the revolution in Germany. Vitellius was said to be coming for the title of Roman Emperor and he had Germany’s blessing. Otho, knowing that the army coming for his throne, tried to come into agreement with Vitellius. Otho offered a truce and that Otho & Vitellius would share the power of being emperor. This was obviously rejected. Otho’s more experienced officials advised against battle, but it was seemingly impossible to avoid.
Otho’s forces were en route when they were surprised by Vitellius’ forces and were overwhelmed by the numbers and forced to retreat. As they were backed to their original camp, the two armies came to reach an agreement, and it seemed that there would be a truce between the two. Otho knew that this truce was temporary and that he and Vitellius could not coincide as one emperor. Otho gave a troubling speech, declaring that the loss of one life is far greater than the loss of many. Otho’s exact words are not know verbatim, but those are what are recorded. The next morning, Otho pierced his heart with a knife that he had stashed in his linens. He was found by his servants just seconds after his death.
At Othos funeral, several of his followers killed themselves to die with their emperor. The sacrifice of Otho gained respect throughout Rome. Vitellius was the next emperor to rule over Rome. However, historians have noted that a vast amount of Romans did not accept Vitellius as their Emperor. At the start of his “rule” he disbanded the Praetorian Guard and put his own men in place of them. This was an unpopular decision within the Roman Empire. (69 A.D.: The Year of Four Emperors – Gwyn Morgan).
Vitellius was not a very active Emperor. Lazy and unmotivated are two words that are actively used to describe his administration. Vitellius did do a few things that future emperors put into practice. Vitellius made it so that furloughs could not be sold by Centurions. In October of 69 A.D., Vitellius restricted astrologers from both Italy and Rome. This caused an uproar from many astrologers and had many of them executed.
For seven months, Vitellius ruled over the Roman Empire. Until it came to be known that the Eastern Provinces had chosen a leader for the Roman Empire and had intentions on overthrowing Vitellius. Vespasian had support from many legions. So many in fact, that the majority of Vitellius’ supporters had abandoned him. It was at this point that Emperor Vitellius agreed to step down. One of Vespasian’s primary supporters agreed to Vitellius stepping down and notified him of this. A bit of trickery was at foot because once Vespasian’s troops found Vitellius he was killed and his head was removed. (Ideology and Humor in Suetonius’ Life of Vespasian 8 – Trevor Luke).
Vespasian was officially declared emperor in December of 69 A.D. His first acts as emperor of Rome were to form new taxes and reinstate old taxes. Vespasian was known to be a very, very focused emperor. He was also known to keep a close watch on Rome’s finances, even by going as far as watching over the treasury officials. This illustrated his obsession with money. Vespasian had many so called “businesses’ going on during his time as emperor. Vespasian was known to purchase goods and sell them back to the public or whomever he bought them from at a highly marked up price.
Vespasian was the first ruler of the Flavian Dynasty. This was when peace was restored in Rome and the civil war that was caused by the suicide of Nero had ended. Vespasian was a fan of art and statues, erecting several during his time as emperor. The provocation of the Flavian Dynasty occurred when Vespasian stated that “his sons would succeed him or no one would”. Vespasian promoted the Flavian Dynasty quite avidly during his decade as emperor.
Vespasian began a program building to what is known today as “The Colosseum”. It was known around the world and in Rome as the “Flavian Amphitheater”. In 79 A.D., Vespasian became very sick and died of a fever. He was succeeded by Titus, who had a very short reign as emperor. (Tacitus – Histories 3)
The final emperor of the Flavian Dynasty was Domitian. This emperor had a seriously sense of entitlement due to Flavian heritage. Domitian demanded respect, used up the resources from the imperial treasury, and made very large mistakes by discarding ancient and respected titles while replacing them with overly confident titles such as “God”. This led to his assassination and the end of the 27 year long Flavian Dynasty. The Year of the Four Emperors was a controversial time for Rome, it paved the way for future dynasties to take over. Rome became a better city during the Flavian Dynasty. That is because of the lessons that were learned during the civil wars and prevention of civil wars during the Year of the Four Emperors.
Mobile responsive websites is a subject that has been a hot point of contention since smart phones came to fruition. The question is, how important is it? From everything I can see data wise, the answer is very. Over 80% of people in the world own smart phones, probably more in the U.S. So this means a LARGE percentage of your customers are going to be looking at your site on a phone. There’s no other way to cut it, so to speak. Adhering to mobile guidelines that allow your site to operate more smoothly on all types of phones also help your SEO, as Google sees it as a “judging” factor. If your website serves ALL cellphones, you’re probably a pretty good site right?
How is mobile responsiveness implemented? There are a number of ways in which to do so, the prevailing method right now is CSS Media Queries, which basically allow the developer to define 2(or many more) separate settings based on how wide the page is. Therefore, if I have a media query that dictates that any page below 960px in width will have it’s text green, that’s possible. These live in conditional statements that allow you to have a living document rather than a static flyer of a website. This shows effort and dynamic-ism in your design on the web, exactly what Google wants to respect you, time and effort into making your website perfect.
It’s a fact that LinkedIn had made major waves in the past year, so get ready to take notes. They’ve been making major moves in just the past few days. Most people understand the value LinkedIn has provided over many years, and LinkedIn has continued to grow in its user base at an incredible rate over recent years. If we zone in on the last few weeks of 2013 and analyze what people are talking about, you’ll find out social media is booming with talk of the new features LinkedIn brings to the table.
So What’s All The LinkedIn Marketing Buzz About?
Let’s take a nice close look at the very most important things that LinkedIn has rolled out this year that you should be taking note of. The social networking sites’ new features are creating so much buzz that you’d be a fool not to take advantage them after reading this article! Well, let’s get to it: these are the most important facts that you should be walking away with about what’s the new scoop on LinkedIn and marketing yourself or your business.
Let’s Get Visual: So Many New Possibilities
If you’re not marketing on LinkedIn at all now is possibly the very coolest time to jump on board. Over the years, LinkedIn has gone through an array of aesthetic changes slowly, while the biggest value that LinkedIn has provided has hands down been the natural strength of being an established network of professionals; the ability LinkedIn presents to connect with numerous B2B professionals (particularly but B2C benefits are seen) has and is truly unsurpassed. The true beauty in the LinkedIn’s new feature is something quite “beautiful” you could say, indeed. LinkedIn rolled out its ability for you to create visual portfolios to display your work, such as pictures, diagrams, presentations, and videos. While you may be thinking immediately that this is something that sure would benefit someone like a photographer or illustrator. Much on the other hand, what we’re seeing with this added functionality is that people who deal in more data-driven or non-visual industries actually have a much greater reach in appeal. Everybody loves visual. This new feature is a total win-win! Product Manager at LinkedIn, Udi Milo puts it perfectly in a statement: “From the analyst who makes annual predictions on tech trends to the 3D animator who is looking to fund a new short film, the opportunities are limitless for how professionals can now use the LinkedIn profile to help showcase these unique stories in a visual way.”
Get Ready For New Homepage Functionality
Then we would like to introduce to you two new features that LinkedIn decided to add this week, which are additional features added to the home page of LinkedIn. They are “Who’s Viewed Your Updates” and “You Recently Visited” sections which will help give you insight into the activity on your profile. While we don’t expect these features to make as much of an impact as the new visual features they rolled out earlier this year, the fact that they did this has them literally rolling a giant snowball of social media buzz. We’re excited to see what more these two new features will bring, as well as what kind of new things we may see with this pace LinkedIn’s got going.
We suggest you try them all out for yourself if you haven’t already!
Smoking Cessation Through Mindfulness Meditation & Breathing
They say curiosity is what killed the cat, and that couldn’t be any further from the truth. It seems to be a pretty persistent fact that the most enticing things in life appeal to us not because of their goodness or their exquisiteness, but because of the mystery of things.
For many teenagers who decide to pick up a cigarette for the first time, there’s naturally a sought after sense of achieving the ‘cool’ factor. Maybe you yourself can recall this situation: standing behind the high school, surrounded by a group of upperclassman who were looking too cool for school—puffing on their cigarettes. The smell may have been a bit obnoxious, topping off the tension and anxious feeling, but when Bobby Badass asked you if you wanted a drag, instead of listening to what your Momma told you, you accepted the invitation without hesitation.
Timid Timmy took his first puff in order to satisfy his desire to fit in with the cool crowd, succumbing to the peer pressure that almost all parents warn of–whether or not they themselves are smokers. My own parents warned me too of the dangers of smoking, reminding me from a very young age of how harmful it could be to be wrapped up in such an addiction. My Mother drew from her own experiences of having been a smoker for many years, telling me that it had been hands down the most difficult thing she had ever overcome.
In my case though, I wasn’t a Timid Timmy, but a Curious Cat. As I got older and hit my teen years, I had developed a growing curiosity for cigarettes. As I’m sure this is the case for many other teens too—and adults alike—I just couldn’t help but wonder what it was like to smoke–the action itself, the taste of the tobacco, and how much of an effect it would really have.
In this day and age, there is certainly no lack of access to information on smoking. Heck, we are living in a day an age where we are able to reach any kind of information, quickly at our fingertips. Most teens, either through the advice of their parents who have battled a smoking addiction, or through educational programs like D.A.R.E, or even through TV advertisements, like the inventive truth commercials that have always had a knack for putting smoking into a rather realistic perspective, have seen just that—the cold hard facts about why smoking is so bad for you and the logical reasoning on why you shouldn’t want to dare pick up such a nasty habit. Somehow despite this, there are new teens picking up packs every day.
As a natural-born rebel, I must admit that deciding to pick up my first cigarette at such a young age (my first puff at age 14) was at least partly influenced by my track-record for going against the grain. But underlying any sense of teenage rebellion that I had stored up in me, deeper there was something much simpler—a burning curiosity. The only way to figure out if the grass is greener on the other side is to hop on over the fence, so naturally I did.
I just so happened to like what was on the other side. Near chain-smoking my way through a half of a pack of Marlboro’s—only stopping because I had smoked myself so sick I had to vomit from the unprecedented nicotine kick. I decided a second pack—but of gum—and some perfume would do the trick and my over-age friend drove me on home. I slid by the first time, but the inevitable happened. I undeniably went through my fair share of ‘groundings’ and even a torn up pack of cigarettes. Regardless of my being underage–it really wasn’t that hard to get my hands on them–and regardless of my parent’s disapproval, I continued on smoking, and grown to really enjoy it; my late summer-night smokes behind the garage, or even socially smoking with friends while sharing coffee at a local diner. Smoking came to be an enjoyable experience—it is our curiousness that draws us into our experiences, but once we open the door, it’s the ambiance within that room that makes us wanting to come back for another stay.
No matter how young or old, having an attachment or addiction to any substance comes as a result of curiosity, but every smoker knows that the result of a smoking addiction is not just a physical repercussion on our health, but a mental dependency. Smokers attach to the addiction of smoking not just the received effects—the physical satisfaction, the reward, the buzz—but with that high comes the accompanying mental addiction, which is the attachment to the setting of your experience—the ambiance of “your room”.
The fact is that in spite of largely successful campaigns like truth’s ads, and the, really, commonplace knowledge that cigarette smoking leads to major long-term health effects, smoking is still incredibly socially acceptable. Although most states in the US have outlawed smoking in places like restaurants, bars, and workplaces, many people still socially smoke and have circles of families and friends who haven’t kicked the habit yet, because well, it’s nice to sit down and have a chat with a friend over a cigarette. Whether a social smoker or not, there is always a situational comfort that goes along with the addiction–every smoker has their own comfort zone.
Some smokers find comfort in smoking with coffee in the morning; some while kicked back on the recliner after a hard day’s work; some to relive the stress and tension that can sometimes generally come with life–or a period of it; some to curb appetite; some ritually as desert after a meal; some to share an experience or a conversation with another smoker; some smokers feel a pleasure from purely from the taste and smell, or the floating cloud of smoke that comes along with smoking.
As I continued my habit, I really enjoyed clearing my mind with a smoke. More of a personal smoker, sitting outdoors and enjoying the silence and gazing on up at the night sky was one of my favorite times to indulge. It was a chance for me to clear my head in between my reading and writing. Also a natural night-owl and borderline insomniac, my smoke breaks were an opportunity to simply reflect and meditate on my work—leaving me refreshed and productive afterwards. I loved the still setting and being able to quietly let my mind be at ease.
When I decided to quit smoking—5 years later at age 19—I was not new to the idea of meditation, but once I had realized that smoking had been taking such a toll on my health and level of fitness, it dawned on me that the most logical route to attempt to quit would be to simply replace my smoking addiction with a healthier, more natural approach to centering myself and I was actually keyed up to start learning more about meditative practices. I decided to quit cold-turkey, and ventured into the situation head first, which is kind of the only way you can go–in my honest opinion–if you want to make things not only easier for yourself to quit, but to better yourself and your mentality as an individual. To quit smoking, it’s crucial for battling quitters to make a firm commitment to their efforts. It’s a hard battle, but for a true change in your mindset to take place you must nip your emotional attachment to smoking in the butt!—no pun intended.
The first step to, and key to, successfully quitting smoking is finding a healthy replacement to your mental enslavement to an addiction. Where you once would find comfort and consolation from a smoke break, relieving stress or boredom, you must reallocate your emotions to a better place, a healthier place not just for your body, but for your mind and soul. Kicking the habit comes with all kinds of repercussions physically and mentally, and the combination of the two can cause a terrible amount of mood swings. Regardless of how long you have been smoking (5 years or 30), you’re going to have to hurdle yourself over the first couple of weeks, which are full of grueling nicotine cravings, and bouts of anger, stress, and even depression. But hurdle you should—because on the other side of this fence, you’ll find the grass is much more pleasantly green.
This pasture of nice, green grass I’m specifically speaking of is mindfulness mediation and yoga. While yoga isn’t for everybody, using meditative therapy with a physical aspect made my experience in quitting smoking—and for many, many others as well—much more successful. Mindfulness meditation, a Buddhist approach to meditation also known as shamatha meditation, is a form of meditation of which the goal is to reach a contended state of mind, through the practice of finding clear consciousness of thought and action—or mindfulness. Ultimately, by practicing mindfulness meditation, one has made the goal to achieve a naturally and consistently peaceful state of mind.
Practicing mindfulness meditation together with yoga is not an uncommon thing at all. They are rather frequently intertwined by many practitioners of both of the exercises. Additionally, in the case of quitting smoking, practicing both meditation and yoga has been proven to be successful for many ex-smokers. It’s pretty simple if you think about it. A smoking addiction is quite physical in a variety of aspects, from the physically addictive properties of nicotine, tobacco, and the other overabundance of carcinogenic chemicals, that are found in cigarettes, and then to the oral fixation and act of smoking in of itself. Omitting smoking from your regimen completely is at first rough, and will not only bring on cravings to alleviate urges to smoke, but will bring on food cravings, which is why many have found that replacing their smoking with exercise or other physical activities helped the adjustment tremendously.
Just as easy as it is to open or close the door to a smoking addiction, directly replacing the addiction or habit by opening the door to your mind to new activities–physical, mental, and emotional–will more easily ensure that the door to your smoking habit won’t be opened up again.
A large component to practicing mindfulness meditation is actually in fact more of a literal door that can be opened—your environment. In practicing this kind of meditation, you must be selective in choosing the right environment, and that means finding a place to go that allows you to relax and that makes you feel uplifted and contended with your surroundings. It’s crucial that where you decide to practice allows for free-thinking. That is the goal of mindfulness meditation after all—to grow with disciplinary practice, furthering self-awareness and peacefulness to the point of eventually remaining in a state of natural content, but by reaching this mentality by allowing yourself to truly evaluate your thoughts and emotions and actions. For starters, if you are someone who smoked in your home, eradicating the smoke scent completely, re-arranging your furniture, painting in a new color, or finding extra space for a new place for practicing, are all great ideas for setting up a comfortable environment once you decide to take on quitting. All the same, mindfulness meditation and yoga can be performed just about anywhere—well, of course mindfulness meditation can! That is the aim—that mindfulness is eventually naturally performed throughout the day in even the simplest of actions—like household chores, showering, and eating.
Once you have queued up for yourself the right environment or chosen your “spot”, where should you begin? What are the actual steps and actions that you should take to help you overcome and replace your dependency for good? In starting practicing mindfulness meditation and yoga, you should begin with shorter periods of concentrated mediation—spending a simple ten to thirty minutes once each at morning and night, picking up frequency as you see fit. Incorporating only at your own pace, a small routine of light yoga positions and stretches, breathing techniques, and focused mindfulness meditation, is a great way to begin—the way. I myself began with breathing techniques during my meditation. I had been practicing meditation for a year prior to my decision to quit smoking, but when I did decide to quit, I vowed not only to quit smoking, but to start eating healthier, and commit to further training my body and mind through taking my meditation and exercise to the next level. As I would often spend time meditating while smoking, once I realized the stupidity of what I was letting myself consume, and putting my body under, it was a firm vow that I had made to myself to not treat my body so unfairly again. Although my goals went beyond just quitting smoking, that doesn’t mean you need to shoot for the stars, but be reasonable with your goals–no sugar coating here, quitting smoking is tough–and taking on the challenge alone is doing wonders to bettering yourself. As I previously mentioned (I can’t stress it enough!), it’s all about going at your own pace. Not everybody has the same level of fitness, the same level of addiction, or the same objective to making a change. For this reason, I do, however, recommend for those whose objective it is to smoking, to follow the simple route of beginning with breathing exercises in using mindfulness meditation.
Using breathing exercises in mindfulness meditations involves remotely focusing on the movement of your breathing. For those trying to reverse their habits, the sensation of breathing can be especially calming to use as a focal point. Success rates have been shown to be very high for those who practiced mindfulness meditation and breathing practices during their attempts to quit smoking. Sitting pretzel-style (my favorite), lying on a flat surface, or sitting in a comfortable upright chair, or even standing, focus on an inhale, an exhale, and repeat the process, while maintaining an open mind for new thoughts and ideas to flow through. In and out, thinking about the depth of your breaths, reflect your concentration back and forth from the action or object of your concentration to the thoughts that come across your mind. Quitters who use this approach will often conjure thoughts that resemble the memories of smoking, as the action is similar in nature. When that happens, the result is actually a very positive one, as the quitter receives a similarly joyful, heightened experience through inhaling, but in a way that is even more fulfilling than smoking ever was. In mindfulness meditation, the idea is to make use of an object or action as to juxtapose it to your natural incoming flow of thoughts. The point is not to “turn off” your senses, but contrarily, you should be opening up to the wider picture of things, yet while being aware of your surroundings and taking in the way the room reflects on you emotionally, your environment isn’t your ultimate or precise focus. You should use a single thing to contrast your thoughts and meditation against–possibly peering out a window, or setting in front of you a rock (this a traditional, yet still popular, choice), or it literally could be any thing. Everybody has their own taste of happiness, pleasure, and relaxation, but some good ideas would be putting on your favorite music, sitting outdoors enjoying the natural sounds and beauty of life, working with your hands in some way therapeutically or artistically, painting or sewing, exercise at any level, or just simply breathing. Any one thing that you can reflect your thoughts off without losing concentration.
After an incredible week of practicing the two together, I was ready—eager!—to begin incorporating yoga techniques into my meditation sessions. It was after practicing the mindfulness meditation and breathing consistently just that week (you must, must, must discipline yourself and stick to your routine whichever it is you commit to) and my life was immediately becoming a lot brighter, a lot clearer, and much more fulfilling. Right away, people close to me were even noticing changes themselves in my attitude, and my general appearance—telling me I looked so happy and so healthy. And I had just begun!
My newfound inspiration and breadth for life (again, no pun intended ;-)) was rubbing off on my friends, family, and co-workers! I was gladly open and honest with them, expressing to them my battle to quit smoking for good and the ways in which was going about it. For the next few months, I stuck to my morning routine, spending about an hour of meditating while breathing, stretching, and practicing yoga. At night, I would do the same, but omitting the yoga and taking more time to move more slowly and with silence. Taking the time slots out of my day to perform my sessions made the rest of my daily activities be in motion with consciousness of my actions as I performed them. My thoughts were naturally positive and in time, I had gained not only control over urges to smoke, or indulge in any poor habits, but I had control over my happiness and my ambition. With the addition of all the tremendous amount of support and feedback I received, adding on to my own new personal mental freedom, the urge to smoke was basically non-existent. There were some times at first when the urge did sprout up during the day, but instantaneously my mind urged rather to move steps forward–not take a step backwards. Sticking with that thought-streak, I moved my life from having urges to smoke, to having the urges to take breathing-breaks!
Now, a near two years later, I still haven’t picked up a cigarette. My life has continued to grow each and every day, learning new things through myself and through my natural need to explore new areas of life. People have continued also to ask me about my journey. Just as I shared my experiences with others who inquired on how I quit, as well as how I had come to find contentedness with life, I sum up my voyage with one simple explanation: Sure, it’s curiosity that killed the cat, but maybe it’s just not until after our 9th life that we open up the door to finally getting things right.
Keeping your website up-to-date doesn’t have to be as time involved as you might think. When it seems like keeping up with the time is something difficult to achieve in modern times, the fact of the matter when it comes to your website is that having classic components integrated will give you a solid, longer-lasting strategy.
1. Responsive is a must. Check your website from multiple devices.
Responsive design is – in sum – your website’s layout and templating being able to properly respond in a pleasing way no matter where it is viewed from. Having your website coded using responsive-friendly code means you are hitting the nail on the head of being mobile-friendly and taking all the elements on your page into account. In April 2015, Google made one its larger changes to their search engine algorithm that directly affected sites that were outdated by not being mobile-friendly. Responsive design also ensures the elements on your web pages (think about the way text reads out, or how images may change in size) for not only phones, but all types of screen sizes for larger hi-def monitors and varying size tablets and laptops.
2. Are you user friendly?
User-friendliness isn’t some mystified ideal to constantly chase. It’s just keeping things simple and making sure that as time goes on, you still apply these principles of easy flow and simplicity. Being minimal doesn’t necessarily mean simple. Simple is necessary. Simple is easy navigation for your audience, however they are best attracted. Simple is no excess but giving them what they want. Simple is nothing that will detract from your goals on page.
4 questions you should be answering yes to in order for your user to find the best experience:
– Have you tested your site speed? Between 2-4 seconds is ideal for most websites, and looking into your load times is your first step to getting your fastest possible.
– Is your contact form easily accessible? Making sure all things are fully in place for a properly functioning contact form are key to making the most out of your website. Be sure it’s in a place you can find with no problem and consider placing it more than just your navigational menu.
– Are you making the most out of your navigation menu? Check what your menu stylistically displays like on different devices to be sure you’re not cutting words off and are full mobile friendly. Make sure you’re displaying the most important items in your menu.
– Is the most important info for your website displayed in your header and footer for contact, hours of operation, and outreach?
3. Incorporate modern features that will last in your management of your site in 2016 and beyond.

Em travels around the basement very well independently. She has clearly mastered standing independently and her ability to creep and walk. She briefly demonstrated her ability to stand on her tip toes while reaching for a stuffed animal her mom held up in the air. Her gait pattern has somewhat of a short swing phase. She also still has a tendency at times to walk with her upper extremities flexed. A slight degree of lower trunk extension can be seen. Also, she still prefers creeping to walking as a quicker form of transportation. These observations lead to the conclusion she is still becoming acclimated to independent walking. Although she is still perfecting the coordination aspect of independent walking, she has reached her level of fixity in this skill.
Em demonstrates a consistently high activity level. However, she displays a short attention span. She is constantly moving from toy to toy with no particular interest or favoritism in one individual thing. This observation can conclude that she has a high distractibility level. For example, had there not been so many options, she may have tried things multiple times such as when she pressed the button on the truck and it played music. If the other toys (environmental stimuli) hadn’t distracted her, she would’ve been more likely to press the music button and dance again. The level of intensity can be seen when her mom asks her to get her puppy. Her mom asks to hold onto her toys while she gets the toy dog. Em gives her mom the toys and has a dramatic overreaction. She gets upset and throws herself on the ground. During this temper tantrum she does demonstrate the reflex of body righting acting on the head. These statements support observations with regard to cognitive mental functions, specifically examples of temperament and the sub-categories: activity level, intensity, persistence/attention span, and distractibility.
During the area of play with the baby dolls and the fake kitchen set, she begins to show some characteristics of Piaget’s substages of sensorimotor period. She opens and closes the oven door repeatedly. This is an example of substage 5: Tertiary circular reaction. During this stage, Piaget states that an action occurs deliberately and is continued because it is pleasurable. She also begins to show slight integration of substage 6: coordination of tertiary circular reactions. This occurs when she gets the bottle for the baby doll. She hasn’t quite transitioned into substage 6 completely but the intent of pretend play (getting the bottle for the baby doll) demonstrates cognitive growth toward the next substage.
Language, although not always verbal, is a key factor throughout the entire video. Em
does not verbalize very frequently. When she is playing on the floor with the toy that launches the balls around and she is trying to recreate the actions her mom tells her to say please; she instead uses sign language indicating “more” as her mom narrates. She does use proper single word utterance. Her mom places a toy cow on a revolving track and asks Em what the cow says and she replies “moo”. Although her verbal communication skills are not fully developed she has strong comprehension skills. When she is playing with a stuffed animal her mom asks her to wave bye-bye and she is able to comprehend what that means and successfully execute theaction.
The subject matter of the video demonstrates play which is a social development
activity. The particular type of play executed was sensorimotor. Sensorimotor play is when a child develops pleasure by interacting with the environment. It could also be classified as solitary play because she was playing by herself. Playing is necessary for helping to develop motor skills, problem solving skills, and autonomy. She demonstrated social interaction by hugging, kissing, and waving bye-bye to the stuffed animal. Those actions are learned socially by modeling or observation followed by imitation.
According to my observations, I believe Em is approximately 15 months old. I believe
she is developing in what would be considered a typical manner. I did not observe anything that would be considered alarming or cause me to conclude any developmental disorder is present. If my hypothesis is correct, it is expected to see an increased rate of development in multiple areas over the next few months. As she approaches 18 months of age she will develop more verbal language skills, such as, two word utterances. She will also integrate further into Piaget’s sub stage 6, as previously discussed. She will also begin to become more independent in herability to perform self-care skills such as brushing her hair or washing her hands.
Technological advancement and the increase of the power of the web is something no small business owner should be turning their head away from. On the contrary, many small business owners are becoming more and more acclimated with ways they can be marketing their business on the web.

3 Golden Rules to Successfully Launching Your Business
The golden rule in life—as we all know well—says: “Treat others the way you would like to be treated.”
But, believe it or not, in the world of business, in order to reach success, the same level of evenhandedness must be found at play—despite the popular image that “business” conjures, of a greedy man competing for as many slices of the pie as he can grab up. It’s not just one golden rule, but many, that will land you any piece of that pie, and they all revolve around treating your business the way it deserves to be treated.
So what are these golden rules I speak off? And how will they ensure your startup is taking off on the right foot?
Be Prepared to Marry Your Business
You heard me right. Let’s think for a moment about the way relationships start. Before you jump right into a romantic relationship, you typically go on some casual dates first, right? And before you jump into the dating scene, you usually have some qualities in mind, or a mental idea, of Mr. Right—right?
The only difference is that your business should be taken as seriously as marriage from the get-go. And that doesn’t mean jump the gun. In fact, you should do the opposite and be cautious not to at all costs. Carefully court your new spouse the way it deserves to be treated—courted and nurtured, giving space where space is needed as the relationship grows, as you learn more about your new partner and what makes them tick, and as your plans transform into a firm commitment once the time is right. Essentially, the marriage ceremony will be the exciting day you cut the red tape, but the point of this golden rule is to prepare yourself for making the commitment that will last (hopefully – if you follow all the rules!) for years to come.
Propose in Public
Let it be known to all ears far and wide! And do it with a bang! If you want people to notice your new venture, once you are comfortable and acquainted with your business structure you must shed light on it with confidence in the public arena. When someone proposes to their significant other in a public setting, the joy is felt by everyone and the sincerity is quite transparent. If you hold your business in the same esteem, it deserves to be treated so. You will be making a statement to others, and those involved with your business, in the way you conduct yourself and present your ideas for the future.
Don’t Forget to Send the Invitations
What I’m referring to here is the entirety of your marketing and advertising efforts. Pre-launch is the single most important time to build buzz and awareness for your up-and-coming business. The way your branding begins here will set the tone for the future of your business and executing properly will either make or break your launch. Do you want a good turn out or what? Make those invites shine and don’t forget to include an RSVP!
Building a brand image is one thing, but undertaking the perfection of your audience’s online user experience on your website – or maybe your web application, is an entirely different thing.
Now, let’s take into account the circumstances that surround marketing campaigns when discussing small business web marketing strategy. May there be set-backs? It’s all accounted for in the well-known risk in small business to manage a web presence. With less budget but more hands typically “on-deck”, hiring in-house employees or training for managing is more likely of a scenario. But here’s the thing:
No matter if you’re employed in-house to manage social media campaigns or if you’re contracted to create content that engages website audiences, you have to keep one thing in mind above all and that won’t ever change: the audience!
When it comes to managing all kinds of aspects of internet marketing campaigns that exhibit excellent user experience borrow their success from the following:
And this, truthfully hurts my insides somewhere just ever so slightly..
Jokes aside, it’s no secret that some people, business owners , do have a website – and love the idea of a flourishing blog – but simply do NOT have the time for it or have other obligations more suitable for their needs. Chances are, if you’re reading this blog post, you don’t fall into that category.
While it’s fine and dandy for this example business owner to be going about his morning routine, you’re here and now, ready to do your job. Perhaps you are your own one-man business and blogging away. Nevertheless, let’s agree that blogging should never be considered a chore.
However, if blogging is a task on your goal list for the day, then consider this: as I sat here and am drinking my coffee and have evaluated my day ahead of me and what I would blog about today, I realize a key component to good blogging is opportunity.
But what can be so opportune to dub thy article one to be read?
My first thought. Each and every day we rise with the sun, with a whole new day of opportunity ahead of us. We are naturally in-sync with this rotation, and we ourselves refresh ourselves every morning. Even if it’s a draft piece, try honing that break-of-dawn feeling and reel it into an uplifting and well thought out blog post.
Whether you write a sentence, a paragraph, or nothing, seeing this first on your screen will boost your inspiration, kick-starting brainstorming consciously or subconsciously before you even hit the keys or pen and paper (Hey, whatever floats your boat!).
There are many ways in which you can keep a tight schedule and lock-down on your rolling motivation to become a consistent blogger. My ultimate suggestion for anybody and everybody is to keep up with an editorial calendar of blog post articles for a time frame – whether a week, a month, a few days, whatever – you are KICKSTARTING and GEARING your brain up to let loose the best advice, information, or entertainment it can dish out to your audience.
There is a chance we all come into a situation where we need money and we need it fast. Bank loans can take weeks to get approved, and no one wants to deal with sketchy payday loan companies. However, there is another option.
Getting a loan from your insurance policy is one option that is actually used more then you would like think. If you have permanent life insurance that is either whole life or universal life, you may be eligible to take out a loan against it. Alternatively, if you have not gotten a quote, you can obtain life insurance quotes online.Term life insurance does not qualify for this because it has a set time limit on the coverage period and does not hold a monetary value. As permanent life insurance plan ages, the cash value goes up.
A common question that gets asked is when should I borrow against my policy and how far into my plan. One of the best things about life insurance loans is that the money goes straight into your bank account and there are no taxes. This is a huge advantage when one is needing all the money they can get and do not want to loose any due to huge taxes.
There really is no set date when your plan will have a solid cash value, but usually after the tenth year of the plan there is a significant amount of cash available. The amount you can borrow against and the percent of the cash value also differs from company to company, so be sure to speak to your agent before you get in a situation that may require this so you know exactly what you are getting yourself into and how much money you will be able to take out. Also obtaining life insurance quotes online will enable a better plan, before the tenth year of your plan.
One of the biggest advantages of a life insurance loan compared to a traditional loan is the fact that you do not need to repay these. This helps a lot if you are in a serious emergency and do not think you will be able to repay the money in a timely matter in order to save your credit. Getting life insurance quotes online helps prevent this. That is why these loans are so popular among those who do have life insurance plans and find themselves in a situation where they need cash and they need it quick.
If for some reason you do plan to pay back the entire amount or a portion of it, you have a few options. One of them being principal payments with annual payments that yield interest. Interest rates depend on your policy and the company that insures you.
If you do not pay back the loan, the insurer can reduce the face amount of the policy if your death does occur. This means less money for your family in the unfortunate event that you do pass away. The interest can really start to stack up after a while and there is a chance your family receives no money if a death does occur, but if you received life insurance quotes online, that shouldn’t occur.
Common uses for a loan include emergencies and not being able to pay the annual premium. What it really comes down to is if you need the money now or if your family will need it in the case of your death.
Insurance is always such a serious topic and should not be taken lightly. No one really ever really talks about the interesting side about it. There are some pretty interesting and fun facts when it comes to an online insurance provider. Here’s just a few of them:
• According to insurance.com, the Subaru WRX is one of the most ticketed cars in America. 1/3 of those who drove them in the last year received a ticket. So for you WRX drivers, be careful. Due to this statistic, you may be paying more for driving this car, so check with your agent if this car will affect your rate at all.
• More than 20,000 people have used an insurance provider to locate insurance and protect them for alien abduction. Yes, this is a real thing. There are insurers out there who offer this type of insurance. In our opinion, this is a waste of money. However, if you feel there is a real risk, this may be something for you to look into.
• There is golf insurance in Japan. In Japan if you get a hole in one, it is a tradition to buy gifts and take all your friends out to the bar. For a small $65 a year, you can be protected for up to $3,000 to cover the costs of celebration. Of course you must have documented proof of the shot, but if you do make the shot, this can come in handy and save you tons of money at the bar.
• Astronauts who took the trip on Apollo 11 were not covered by life insurance due to the very real fact of something that could possibly happen to them. To cover their families in case something happened, they all created huge autograph collections for the families to sell in cases something did happen. They could not find an online insurance provider then, but luckily you can now.
• John Harrison is the official taste tester of Dryers Ice Cream, a very popular ice cream brand sold in nearly every store. To ensure he had a source of income in case something happened to his tongue, he insured his tongue for $1,000,000. If your job involves your tongue, this may be something you should look into. In fact, it is not rare for someone to get a body part insured. It is very common for people such as auctioneers and singers to get their voice insured in case something happens to it and they are no longer able to produce music or auction. It is much more common than one would think. Use an online insurance provider to assist with getting a body part insurance.
• Halloween of 1974, a boy died after eating poisoned candy. His father took out a life insurance policy for him a few weeks before and gave his son the poisoned candy so he could receive a $40,000 pay out. Needless to say, he was quickly caught and had fingers pointed at him.
• Mariah Carey insured her legs for over $1 billion dollars. This is more than any professional athlete, and it seems she cares more about her legs than her voice. It makes sense because if she is unable to stand and perform, she could be losing out on millions in concerts.
• David Beckham, a famous soccer player, insured each of his legs for $35 million. I guess this makes sense when you are a professional soccer players who rely on his legs for a source of income and to support his family.
• The famous Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards, had only his middle finger insured for $1.6 million dollars, no one is to sure why, but he did seem to use it a lot. This is almost as weird as the breast insurance policy Dolly Parton picked up.
• The most expensive life insurance policy ever recorded was purchased by an anonymous Silicon Valley resident. He purchased a policy worth over $201 million dollars. He beat the previous record of $100 million purchased by David Geffen. It is said this was found out by his online insurance provider leaving a database open.
• The modern US insurance we are used to was invented by one of America’s founders, Benjamin Franklin. He started the first property insurance we are now used to. He started this due to epidemic of fires sweeping through Philadelphia homes and buildings. In fact, the company is still in business today and is doing very well providing online insurance.
• Your credit rating may affect your insurance price. In fact, credit history can affect your monthly rate as much as a speeding ticket in some cases. An online insurance provider can help you receive the lowest possible rate.
• About half of the money you pay each month goes to keeping the business alive. This money goes towards administrative costs and any other expense that go along with operating a company as large as National Corporation.
• The highest rate of uninsured drivers is located in Mississippi.
• It is well known that those under 25 often pay the highest premiums. However, just turning over 25 does not mean your premium will drop. Many people think that once you pass this sage your premium will simply drop and go to the rate that most normal adult drivers pay. This is not always the case. Often times it requires you talking to insurance company and negotiating a deal.
• Married drivers are known for being the safest drivers. They get in less accidents and relieve less tickets than those who are single. In return they often get the married driver discount which equates to huge savings each month.
• With the invention of the internet came the drop in insurance costs. With tons of different comparison sites popping each month, rates dropped significantly. The internet allowed consumers to compare prices and see if they are really getting the best deal for their money. This greatly helped the consumer, but forced insurers to drop prices to match competitors as it was much easier now to find a good deal.

Probably the most important consideration is how much your home is exposed to sunlight. In the event you live somewhere exactly where the sun does not shine often, or in a shady location, you won’t get as much advantage from solar energy.
Be a better consumer of energy, and reduce your home energy usage by unplugging your electronic chargers once they are not in use. Chargers for laptops, mp3 players, cell phones as well as other devices use power when they’re plugged in. This happens no matter whether or not you are utilizing the device or not.

Last week, I wrote an article extolling the value of content in today’s post-Penguin and post-Panda world. I can understand that writing fresh, unique content every day can be a largely daunting task (as it is for me sometimes, in between all of our business operations), but here are 3 great tips to help write some easy articles that you might not have thought about before, to get your site back ontop after Penguin.
Although you may think to summarize your business in a couple of sentences, and maybe it can be somewhat effectively done in that little space, consider writing individual articles for each topic. Think: if you have an electrician business, maybe you would write one article about new advances in wiring, one about effective wiring techniques that your business is now implementing, one about the different types of places you service, and maybe just one about general electricity! That’s already 4 articles, which is pretty close to a very respectable base for a website (although more content is ALWAYS better!). If you’re making a website for something, you should have a strong passion for it (especially your business), so it shouldn’t be too hard to make informative, exciting content.
List making is a very powerful “trick” that virtually ALL media outlets use in order to pump out effective, readable and organized content. Think of a paradigm within your business/the business your website is involved in, and just force out the words. That isn’t to say, publish bad content, but 9/10 when you feel there’s “nothing left to write about”, you’re just not being very creative about what you have to write about. After all, if you’re doing your business most of your life, you should have plenty of things to share, even if they are stories or words of wisdom.
SEO companies will always tell you the best thing you can do for your business’s presence online is to simply make informative content, and people will share it. While sometimes that’s not the most effective strategy, if you have an idea no one has created before, people will be scrambling to share it by the time you publish. Effective content marketing is one of the cornerstones of SEO, and internet marketing in general. Just remember to be brief, while still being informative.
